“Social networking sites are literally killing us” Scrapping, blogging, tweets, and posting is a new language that we are learning. Three years ago this language would have been foreign to me, but now days these terms are commonly used. Social networking sites are taking the world by storm. To date 142 sites exist, and this number is growing every day. These sites seem be a powerful force, and the addictive nature of them is a major concern. What are all the hours we spend on them doing to our minds and are they really a safe place to mingle with friends? A professor of pharmacology at Oxford University, Susan Greenfield said “My fear is that these technologies are infantilising the brain into the state of a small child, who are attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights, who have a small attention span and who live for the moment”
She has suggested that conducting personal relationships through a screen could be having an effect on the brain of users and might even be related to the rise in both A.D.H.D and Autism.
Social networking sites are as addictive as nicotine or sex, people are spending countless hours every day on these sites. Statistics show that one in every eleven minutes online globally, is accounted for by social networking and blogging sites. This works out to be 85,500 years spent on blogs and social networking sites alone in December last year. The statistics show that the majority of us spend around 35 minutes on social networking sites per day. The problem with this is that people are isolating themselves.
Doctor Aric Sigman from the British Royal Society of Medicine went as far as saying that social networking sites may cause cancer, stroke, heart disease and dementia. He explained that increased isolation could alter the way genes work and upset immune responses, hormone levels and function of arteries. It could also impair mental performance. He said that interacting ‘ in person’ had effects on the body not seen in writing emails. Levels of hormones such as the cuddle ‘chemical’ oxytocins which promotes bonding, altered according to whether people were in close contact or not. He also added that ‘social networking sites should allow us to embellish our social lives, but what we find is very different.’
So what we are finding is that these sites are not being used in moderation and are replacing common person to person communication, this is harming our minds and bodies in ways we do not realise.
I believe that we are creatures made for personal interaction and these sites are slowly killing that.
Free speech is what we long for and these sites are giving us the chance to have our voices heard, not only by our friends but worldwide. It’s always great to have our say but is it really safe to have our voices heard by everyone?
On the 21st August 2007 Adnan Patrawala aged 16, was murdered by one of his so called friends on ORKUT, which is Google’s social networking site. Someone created a false identity as a girl named ‘Angel’, befriended him and asked him to meet up. After constant nagging he finally agreed. Adnan was taken hostage and held to ransom before he was strangled to death by his captors. This was not the first time this has happened on a social networking site.
Social networking sites are total invasion of privacy. Sure a smiley face can be exchanged with simply the control + S key, and a kiss is replaced with an xxx but will these ever compare to the real emotion our bodies need to see, touch and feel? I think not.
