I have always been interested in the study of communications and the opportunity presented itself to me at the beginning of 2009 to do the Diploma of Communicaiton and Media at Wollongong TAFE. It was the second best thing I've ever done (the first being an Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts at Wollongong West TAFE, majoring in Photography).
This year's course has encouraged me to go back to writing - something I had almost forgotten I loved to do! - and creating blogs and other online media is great fun!
Better yet, I have learnt a lot of skills about promotion and plan to use those skills in the future to help other artists who are starting out to find their place in the big bad world ;)
Promoting Youth Arts and Activities in the Illawarra
ARTSTART
My first experience with having a story and artwork published was through an arts program called ARTSTART. It was run by Uni students from the Youth Centre and gave Wollongong peeps the opportunity to be a part of a book called "ZOMBIE MOTEL". I remember getting the letter saying my work would be published and I can tell you, it was a FANTASTICfeeling.
The good news? It's on again! And its bigger and better than before! It is now not just an opportunity to get published but it has grown into a Youth Arts and Skills Festival.
Here is some handy info:
ArtStart is a NSW Government initiative for young people in NSW aged 12 to 24. The program builds skills and community networks through creative projects and events, highlighted in a biennial festival celebrated at a local level and online.
Since its establishment, there have been nine ArtStart Festival programs involving an estimated 90,000 young people in over 18,000 workshops and projects. Over this time, approximately 1,600 events have been held, including exhibitions, concerts, film festivals, radio broadcasts and launches, so it's a pretty big deal and is definitly worth getting involved in!
You can join in by uploading your artworkherein any of the following categories:
A focus on youth and folk music at the 25th Illawarra Folk Festival.
Folk music is music of the people; people of every age!
For the last couple of years a Youth Folk Concert has been held with wild gyspy ensembles, traditional trios, sensational soloists and youth folk bands like you've never seen before!
At this year's Illawarra Folk Festival there will be a whole venue for the Friday and Saturday for youth performers.
There two main reasons for this:
The first is to encourage younger performers to perform in public and to a folk festival audience
And secondly to provide youth performers a chance to see other like-minded performers in action!
